Enhancing spearmint (Mentha spicata L.) Essential Oil Quality: Role of Drought Stress and Harvest Time in Secondary metabolite Modification

چکیده :

Environmental management plays a key role in optimizing the production of phytochemical compounds, especially essential oils. This study investigated the effects of drought stress and harvest time (I and II) on the concentration of secondary metabolite compounds in spearmint (Mentha spicata L.). The results showed that, in comparison between harvest times, compounds such as β-Pinene (53.85% decrease) and limonene (10.76% decrease) declined in harvest II, while sabinene increased by 25.93%. Under drought stress, the concentrations of 1,8-Cineole (110.20% increase) and germacrene-D (187.61% increase) rose significantly under severe stress, indicating a plant defense response. However, carvone decreased by 17.09% under severe stress, likely due to limited energy resources. The interaction between stress and harvest time revealed that germacrene-D increased more in harvest I under severe stress (360.53%) compared to harvest II (100%), whereas β-pinene sharply declined in harvest II under severe stress (89% decrease). The findings suggest that optimal stress management (moderate level) and proper harvest timing can enhance essential oil quality and the production of valuable compounds, which is important for industrial and agricultural applications.
