Chemical Composition, Antioxidant, and Antibacterial Activities of the Essential Oil of Salvia viridis from Zanjan Province, Iran

چکیده :
Background and Objective: The emergence of antibiotic resistance and side effects of conventional therapies highlight the need for new antimicrobial agents. This study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities of the essential oil of Salvia viridis (purple sage) from Zanjan Province, Iran. Methods: The aerial parts of S. viridis were collected and hydrodistilled using a Clevenger apparatus. Antibacterial activity against standard strains was determined by microdilution methods to assess MIC and MBC values. Antioxidant capacity was evaluated using the DPPH assay and compared with butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Chemical constituents were identified by GC/MS analysis. Results: The essential oil exhibited the strongest antibacterial effect against Staphylococcus epidermidis but showed no inhibitory activity against Micrococcus luteus, Salmonella typhi, Lactobacillus casei, and Escherichia coli. The IC₅₀ value for antioxidant activity was 46.47 mg/mL compared with 22.33 mg/mL for BHT. Major components of the oil included 1,8-cineole (62.15%), β-gurjunene (12.39%), α-pinene (15.95%), camphene (3.06%), borneol (7.53%), and camphor (3.76%). Conclusion: The essential oil of S. viridis demonstrated significant antioxidant and selective antibacterial activities, suggesting its potential as a natural alternative for antimicrobial therapy.
