Health tourism is growing at a pace much faster than other segments in the tourism industry. Health tourists outspend other kind of tourists, with a typical health tourist spends 1168 $ on average while a normal tourist spends about 785 per trip (Global wellness Institute, 2022). Hence, destinations more and more attempt to introduce new treatments and therapeutic health tourism products in order to attract this lucrative market, and to relate their identical natural properties with healing characteristics to their brand identity. The extant research has revealed that health tourists are looking for wellness products with two key characteristics: 1) being supported by trial-based scientific evidences, and 2) being authentic. Evidence-based products means that there should be clear support by scientific trial-based medical research for the therapeutic effect of herbs and substances such as kelps, seaweeds, molds, etc. that are applied for treatment purposes. Against this, for instance, pharmacology or biotechnology of thalassotherapy are nowadays attempting to inspect new medical-therapeutic applications for the herbs and animals of ocean. The second key characteristic, authenticity, refers to the extent to which the healing treatment has its roots in the cultural, ethnic and historic background of the destination. As an example, Ayurveda, as a traditional Indian system of medicine, has merged quite well into the brand identity of India as a health tourism destination; or people think that practicing Yuga in India is much more effective that doing it in anywhere else. The importance of health product authenticity as an antecedent of tourists’ decision making has caused increasing number of ethnobotany studies to explore the local meaning and application of different healing herbs and related rituals in different regions. In addition, the commercialization of the research findings related to healing natural resources of a destination begs close collaboration between traditional medicine, pharmacology, pharmacognosy, molecular biology, chemistry, ethnography, and tourism marketing and branding fields of study. Current research aims to develop a framework for the purpose of facilitating these collaborations in order to achieve a health tourism brand identity which is based on authentic, evidence-based natural therapeutic health tourism products. Formation of a Center of Excellence (CoE) to develop and market new authentic natural therapeutic products is at the center of the conceptual model. The processes of this CoE will be guided by the concept of New Product Development (NPD), meaning that in a back-and-forth process, ideas for developing new products, drawing from either listening to the needs and wants of health tourists or the scientific team initiatives, are collected, assessed, selected, and translated into an agenda for scientific research projects in the CoE.
