The Pharmacology and Therapeutic Potential of Salvia Species: Phytochemical and Clinical Evidence

چکیده :
The genus Salvia (sage) has transitioned from a traditional remedy to a focus of systematic pharmacological research. This review integrates current knowledge of its chemistry dominated by terpenoids and phenolics and the pharmacology attributable to those constituents. Across diverse experimental systems, Salvia extracts most consistently attenuate inflammation and oxidative stress, often by modulating NF-κB–driven signaling and activating the Nrf2 axis to strengthen endogenous defenses. These same pathways plausibly underlie preclinical signals of neuroprotection, anticancer activity, and metabolic regulation. By contrast, the clinical literature remains limited and methodologically heterogeneous, with small samples and nonstandardized extracts. Progress now depends on rigor: chemically characterized products, harmonized dosing, and adequately powered, preregistered trials to enable a fair test of Salvia’s therapeutic value rather than an assumption of benefit.
