Identification of Chemical Compounds and Phytochemistry of Spearmint (Mentha spicata) Essential Oil under Cultivation in zanjan province

چکیده :
Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is a perennial, aromatic herbaceous plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Due to its bioactive compounds, it has wide applications in the food industry (as a flavoring agent and natural preservative), pharmaceutical industry (antispasmodic, antiflatulent, antimicrobial, and antioxidant), cosmetics, and perfumery. This study aimed to analyze the chemical composition and phytochemical properties of spearmint essential oil cultivated under the climatic conditions of Zanjan. The research was conducted at the field site and the laboratory of the Institute of Modern Biological Technologies at the University of Zanjan. The aerial parts of the plant were harvested at the full flowering stage, and the essential oil was extracted using hydrodistillation with a Clevenger apparatus. Chemical analysis was performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The results showed an essential oil yield of 2.1% (v/w), with 32 compounds identified, accounting for 98.5% of the total essential oil content. The major compounds included carvone (58.3%), limonene (18.7%), 1,8-cineole (6.5%), β-myrcene (4.2%), and α-pinene (2.8%). The high abundance of oxygenated monoterpenes, particularly carvone, was notable. The semi-arid climate, calcareous soil, and high solar radiation in Zanjan significantly influenced the biosynthesis of these compounds. These findings highlight the potential of spearmint cultivated in Zanjan as a rich source of bioactive compounds for pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic industries.
