The Effectiveness of Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Fibromyalgia: Their Potential Role in Pain and Inflammation

Fibromyalgia is a complex condition characterised by symptoms such as widespread muscle pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, depression, and anxiety. This condition affects millions of people worldwide, negatively impacting their quality of life, and treatment response may vary between individuals. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids that play numerous biological roles in the body and may offer potential benefits in pain management by regulating inflammation-related processes. Omega-3, particularly its eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) components, is thought to be effective in the treatment of inflammation-related diseases such as fibromyalgia. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of omega-3 fatty acids in the treatment of fibromyalgia. Academic databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched for this systematic review. The search was limited to studies conducted between 2015 and 2025, and only full-text articles investigating the efficacy of omega-3 fatty acids in fibromyalgia patients were included. Studies were searched using keywords such as ‘fibromyalgia’, ‘omega-3’, ‘eicosapentaenoic acid’, ‘docosahexaenoic acid’, ‘pain management’, “inflammation”, ‘randomised controlled trial’, and ‘cross-sectional study’. The studies reviewed were categorised as experimental or cross-sectional. The search identified a total of five studies. These included three experimental studies and two cross-sectional studies. The experimental studies observed that omega-3 fatty acids provided significant improvements, particularly in pain levels and inflammation markers. Omega-3 supplements not only reduced the severity of symptoms but also improved the quality of life of fibromyalgia patients. Cross-sectional studies showed that omega-3 use was commonly preferred in fibromyalgia patients and that supplementation led to some improvements in pain management. In conclusion, there is evidence that omega-3 fatty acids have positive effects on pain, inflammation, and quality of life in the treatment of fibromyalgia. However, it is noted that studies on the efficacy of omega-3 are limited in number. More extensive, long-term, high-quality randomised controlled trials will more clearly determine the role of omega-3 in fibromyalgia treatment. Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered as an adjuvant in fibromyalgia treatment, but further research is required before their use in clinical practice.
