Pollination syndrome and breeding system in Echium amoenum: Local populations on the verge of collapse due to pollinator limitation

چکیده :

Background: The shortage of pollinators may hinder sexual reproduction and negatively affect the distribution and persistence of individual plant populations. Aims: Here, we tested the hypothesis that failure of sexual reproduction due to the limitation of pollinators may contribute to local extinction of Echium amoenum populations. Methods: We assessed floral traits and pollinator visitation frequencies in three native populations. We also conducted controlled pollination experiments and examined progeny performance to estimate pollen limitation (PL) and inbreeding depression. Results: Floral measurement analyses showed that E. amoenum is a heterostylous species and up to seven stylar morphs may be observed in each population. Hand-pollinations indicated that E. amoenum was a self-incompatible outcrosser. Sexual reproduction in our study populations mostly depended on the members of Apidae and Bambidae. No seed sets were observed in the absence of floral visitors. Conclusions: Pollinator limitation and inbreeding depression may explain the decline in the natural populations of E. amoenum as they are heavily dependent on floral visitors to successfully produce viable seeds.
