Phytochemical Characterization of sage( Salvia officinalis L.) Essential Oil Grown in Zanjan's Climatic Region

چکیده :

This study examines the phytochemical properties of essential oil extracted from Salvia officinalis L. (sage) cultivated in the unique climatic conditions of Zanjan, Iran. The aerial parts of the plant were harvested at full flowering stage, and the essential oil was obtained through hydrodistillation using a Clevenger apparatus. Chemical analysis was performed via gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The essential oil yield was found to be 2.1% (v/w), with 32 compounds identified, representing 96.8% of the total oil composition. The major constituents included α-thujone and β-thujone (28.5% combined), 1,8-cineole (19.3%), camphor (14.7%), α-humulene (6.2%), and borneol (4.9%). Oxygenated monoterpenes, particularly thujones and 1,8-cineole, were the dominant chemical class, defining the essential oil’s characteristic profile. Zanjan’s semi-arid climate, calcareous soils, high solar exposure, and notable diurnal temperature shifts appear to significantly influence the biosynthesis of key phytochemicals, especially monoterpenes. These findings highlight the region’s potential for producing high-quality sage essential oil rich in bioactive compounds suitable for pharmaceutical, aromatherapy, and industrial applications.
