چکیده :
To evaluate the effects of wood alcohol application and planting substrate on the early growth of tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus L.) under different drought stress conditions, a greenhouse experiment was conducted at Torbat Heydarieh University during 2024–2025. The study was arranged as a three-factor factorial based on a completely randomized design with three replications. Treatments included wood alcohol application at two levels (no application and application), planting substrate at two levels (sandy–light soil and clay–heavy soil), and drought stress at three irrigation intervals (every 2, 4, and 6 days). Results indicated that drought stress significantly reduced germination traits and early growth parameters. Wood alcohol improved most germination and growth characteristics, although it had no significant effect on germination percentage. The best growth performance was observed in light soil with irrigation every 2 and 4 days, with no significant difference between them. The highest leaf number, shoot fresh and dry weight, and plant height were obtained from wood alcohol application combined with irrigation every 2 days in loamy soil. Furthermore, wood alcohol application in heavy soil alleviated the negative impacts of drought stress. Overall, the findings suggest that wood alcohol can be recommended as a management strategy to mitigate drought stress and enhance the early growth of tarragon in arid and semi-arid regions. The highest growth was observed in light soil with 2- and 4-day irrigation intervals, with no significant difference between them. In heavy soil, wood alcohol mitigated the negative effects of drought and enhanced early plant growth. The findings indicate that wood alcohol can increase plant resistance under drought stress conditions. In addition to improving early growth, it may also enhance the final yield of lemon balm. This study confirms the effectiveness of wood alcohol as a useful tool in sustainable cultivation of medicinal plants
