چکیده :

The accelerating degradation of natural resources, including water, soil, and native or endemic plant species, poses a serious threat to biodiversity and ecological security. The conservation of medicinal plant genetic resources, particularly those at risk of extinction, remains one of the major challenges in sustainable natural resource management. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a gene bank in conserving the genetic resources of medicinal plants within the natural ecosystems of Bushehr Province, Iran. Seed samples were obtained from natural habitats in accordance with the standards of the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) and the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI). Following the assessment of germination capacity, physical purity, seed moisture content, and thousand-seed weight, the samples were stored in the gene bank under controlled conditions. The results revealed the highest species diversity belonged to the families Apiaceae, Poaceae, Asteraceae, Brassicaceae, Papilionaceae, and Lamiaceae. The main threats identified were land-use change and habitat destruction (such as road construction and the expansion of oil and gas industries), unauthorized and unsustainable harvesting, as well as intentional and unintentional wildfires. Overall, the findings confirm the effectiveness of gene banks as a scientific and practical approach for conserving the genetic resources of medicinal plants and threatened species, and they highlight the need to expand such programs to other regions of the country.
