Medicinal and Pharmacological Properties of Eryngium caucasicum Trautv.

چکیده :

Eryngium caucasicum Trautv., belonging to the Apiaceae family, is an aromatic herbaceous species native to the northern regions of Iran. Due to its richness in phenolic compounds and high antioxidant activity, it has attracted considerable attention in pharmacological research. Active compounds in this plant, such as limonene, flavonoids, and folic acid, play a significant role in modulating biological processes including the reduction of oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. These mechanisms are effective in the prevention and management of chronic diseases, such as iron-deficiency anemia, inflammatory joint diseases, and cancer. The root of Eryngium caucasicum, mainly harvested in autumn, contains sugars and sucrose, and possesses antifungal, antibacterial, and antispasmodic properties. It is used in the treatment of urinary tract infections, pertussis (whooping cough), liver disorders, and kidney stone elimination. Multiple studies have demonstrated the efficacy of methanolic extract of Eryngium caucasicum against antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, indicating its considerable potential as a natural source of antimicrobial compounds. Furthermore, the plant's diuretic and immune-boosting effects contribute to improved digestive function and toxin elimination, thereby expanding its therapeutic applications. These findings highlight the high potential of Eryngium caucasicum in complementary medicine and the development of herbal drugs, which warrants further clinical and pharmacological investigations.
