چکیده :
The Effect of Drought Stress on the Quantity and Quality of Essential Oil in the Medicinal Plant Sage (Salvia officinalis L.) Sage (Salvia officinalis L.), a member of the Lamiaceae family, is one of the most important medicinal plants with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. Its essential oil has wide applications in the pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic industries. This research was conducted using a completely randomized design with four irrigation treatments (full irrigation as control, mild stress at 75%, moderate stress at 50%, and severe stress at 25% of field capacity) and three replications. Essential oil extraction from the aerial parts of the plant at full flowering stage was carried out using hydrodistillation with a Clevenger apparatus for 3 hours. The results showed that moderate drought stress (50% field capacity) significantly increased the essential oil yield to 2.8%. Chemical analysis using GC/MS revealed significant changes in secondary metabolite content: the percentage of major compounds, including thujone (from 24.5% to 31.2%) and camphor (from 12.3% to 16.5%), increased under mild and moderate stress conditions, while severe stress caused a significant reduction in 1,8-cineole. This study demonstrates that controlled drought stress not only enhances the quantity of essential oil by stimulating monoterpene biosynthetic pathways but also improves its quality by increasing key bioactive compounds. Therefore, optimized irrigation management can be employed as an effective and sustainable strategy for the industrial production of sage with higher essential oil content and added pharmaceutical value. Keywords: Drought stress, Field capacity, Medicinal plants, Monoterpenes,Thujone.
